Article: Human Capital Partners Managing Director Asia Vanessa Moriel delivered a presentation on Talent in the New Age of Connected Vehicle for the more than 70 automotive industry professionals gathered at the August edition of the Automotive Roundtable at Beijing’s Zeit Berlin restaurant on August 25, 2015. Roundtable speakers and participants met to discuss the topic of Talent Management and Development in the Age of New Technology Vehicles.

During her presentation, Vanessa began by exploring the evolving automotive ecosystem. As she outlined, major drivers of change in the industry are coming from 6 key factors: Innovation in Infotainment & Communications, Big Data, Telematics, Alternative Ownership Models, Environmental Responsibility, and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. These factors of change are having an effect across the process of creating the product and bringing it to the market to consumers, from: Technical Engineering and Infrastructure Design; to After Sales Services, Sales & Retailing, and E-Marketing.

1

The arrival of these new technologies and trends has led to the creation of new roles for automotive executives. These emerging roles include: National and Global roles in Marketing for Connectivity Marketing, Telematics & Infotainment Marketing, and Digital Marketing; National and Global roles in Sales for Retail Development and In-Car Technologies; and, National and Global roles in Aftersales Support for EV Infrastructure, Customer Experience & Satisfaction, Digital Services, and Remote Service Centre.

2

However, the emergence of these new roles has created a major challenge for automotive OEMs. In recruiting these in-demand candidates, automotive OEMs are now in direct competition with technology companies and companies in other sectors who are facing similar talent shortages. Further, because these new roles require a non-traditional skillset, it becomes much harder for automotive companies to evaluate and identify high potential leaders. HCP has been working closely with its automotive clients to develop solutions for these issues, developing an expertise in executive talent management and acquisition for connected vehicles in Asia and across the world.

Vanessa Moriel’s presentation was followed by presentations from Dr. Niels Bosse, Senior Director of HR and Administration, Volkswagen (China) Investment Co., Ltd., on the topic of Personnel and Management Development in the Age of New Technology Vehicles at VGC; and by Mr. Marcus Klapdor, Manager, CPC Unternehmensmanagement AG, speaking on the topic of Leadership Development in International Automotive OEMs in China.

These presentations were followed by a panel discussion on Talent Management and Development in the Age of New Technology Vehicles. The panel was moderated by Mr. Joerg Heil, General Manager, Hartung:consult. Ms. Moriel, Dr. Bosse, and Mr. Klapdor were joined by Mr. Thomas Dobrowsky, Project Manager FUHU Powertrain Academy, FUHU (Shenyang) Automotive Powertrain R&D Co., Ltd., for the panel discussion. The panel discussion was followed by a Q&A section.
