Article: HCP China’s Managing Director Asia and Founder Vanessa Moriel was proud to once again partner with the organizers of the CBU/CCPIT – Auto International Conference taking place April 21-22 at the Swissôtel Grand Shanghai. This year’s conference revolved around the theme China’s Automobile Market in the Age of E-Commerce, Connected Vehicles and Green Mobility.

During a speech at the event, Ms. Moriel discussed the growing interest for local interdisciplinary talents in the Chinese automotive sector. Vanessa pointed out that automotive multinationals are increasingly hiring top local management talents. These companies tend to select “Best in Class” talents for shared services, such as HR, finance, and legal departments. Meanwhile, they tend to establish in-house teams made up primarily of local talents for sales and aftersales services, allowing them to better understand the local customer and market.

According to Vanessa Moriel, “Key factors to consider while recruiting foreign talents in China include the person’s interest in the automotive industry, strategic and managerial experience, compensation model, cultural differences and stability.” Vanessa showed her formula for identifying great leaders, which includes traits such as agility, balance, confidence, drive, the ability to be engaging and a future-orientation. She believes that companies such as Bosch and General Motors are leaders amongst foreign OEMs in terms of cultivating local talents in China.

Ms. Moriel also discussed efforts by major technology firms such as Apple and LeTV to enter the automotive market. This highlights a growing demand for non-traditional talents in the automotive industry. These include professionals from the consumable industry, telecoms, as well as the online and digital engineering sectors. She believes that automotive professionals will undergo a period of profound transformation and upgrading in the next 3-5 years as the industry responds to changes brought about by connectivity, smart cars and big data.

Automotive executives gathered for the conference discussed the world’s largest new vehicle market in the age of automotive e-commerce, connected vehicles and opportunities in vehicle electrification under China’s new leadership. Notable speakers at this year’s event included: Jack Cheng, Vice President, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles APAC; Chunrong Li, President, Dongfeng Passenger Vehicle Co.; Patrick Leinenbach, GM, Bosch Automotive Products (Suzhou) Co., Ltd. & Regional President, Bosch Automotive Electronics China; Lu Qun, Chairman, Beijing Changcheng Auto Technology Corp.; He Yi, CEO, Connected Vehicles, Leshi Holding Group; and Xigao Wang, Chairman, Jiangling Motors Co., Ltd.

Ms. Vanessa Moriel participated in a panel entitled Policy Environment and the Future of the Market. The panel was moderated by Wayne Xing, Honorary Editor in Chief, CBU/CAR. Other participants included Xiao Zhengsan, Secretary General, China Automobile Dealers Association; Huang Yonghe, Chief Engineer and Director of Policy Research, CATARC; and, Lei Xing, Chairman, CBU Analytic.

Ms. Moriel also moderated a panel entitled The Connectivity Roadmap during the CCPIT conference. She also delivered a presentation entitled Facing the Transformation Era: Impacts on Talent Acquisition during the CBU Conference. She spoke about the effects of developing trends in Infotainments, Assisted Driving, Retailing, Big Data, Connectivity, and Emission Standards for talent acquisition in the Chinese automotive market.
