Human Capital Partners Managing Director Asia Vanessa Moriel had the opportunity to participate in a panel discussion on the automotive engineering talent pool in China. Other panelists included Dr. Frank Zhao, Director of the Tsinghua Automotive Strategy Research Institute (TASRI); Binyi Bai, Powertrain Director of China Operations, Volvo Car Corporation; and Dr. Ing. Jan-Welm Biermann, Vice Director of fka, Forschungsgesellschaft Kraftfahrwesen Aachen mbH.
Vanessa discussed the challenges facing local OEMs as they compete with foreign brands, future trends with regards to engineering teams in the next 5 years, the differences between local and foreign engineers, and the way forward for industry academic cooperation in order to upgrade engineering talents in China.
“The real deficiency for China is quality engineering,” said Vanessa in an interview following the panel discussion. “For China to get away from application engineering and into core engineering, it needs engineers with 15-20 years of experience in the market. We see a lot of shortage in powertrain engineering, engines, combustion systems, emissions systems, and weight reduction; especially when it comes to technical expertise that is combined with leadership, teamwork, multitasking, communications skills and other soft skills and management abilities.”

HCP has a successful track record in helping automotive companies upgrade the local talent force into a global level team, whether it be with Chinese nationals, returnees, or foreigners coming from countries where they have the edge in that particular product or segment”
The 2014 International Automotive Congress hosted more than 20 speakers at the cutting edge of technology, including: Paul Sun, Regional President China, Bosch Starter Motors and Generators; Yixi Yuan, Manager of Competence Centre Engine, IAV China; Weirong Fang, Global Director of Transmission Dept, SMTC, SAIC MOTOR Corporation; Dr. Yong Chen, Vice President of the Geely Automobile Research Institute; Thomas Martin, Head of R&D China, Continental Automotive Interior Wuhu Co., Ltd.; Dr. Henrik Adam, CCO of Tata Steel; and Pierre-David Andre, Product Engineer of Novelis (Shanghai) Aluminum Trading Co., Ltd. The event attracted over 300 industry participants, allowing HCP to continue building strong links across the automotive industry.

HCP Managing Director Asia Vanessa Moriel talked about changes in the need for senior engineering talents in China’s automotive industry during an interview at the 7th international automotive Congress in Shanghai.
For Vanessa, as the industry moves toward self-driving, greener cars, the range of talents needed to deal with connectivity, sensors, efficiency, weight reduction, and other engineering challenges is increasing. There is also a great need for experienced core engineers dealing with powertrain, combustion systems, and engines.
